For me, it was the simple fact that life goes by too quickly and I wanted to get off the hamster wheel of waking up, driving to work, driving home, going to bed, only to have to do it all over again. Working from home also allows you to save on childcare. I was shocked to find out from a fellow mom friend, pregnant for her second, that her unborn baby was already on the daycare’s waitlist for when her baby turned 1 year old and her maternity leave ended (I’m in Canada). How crazy is that! 

Daycares are packed to the brim and virtually all of them have waitlists so working from home can save you the stress of finding an available daycare spot for your child and save on the astronomical costs. 

Another wonderful benefit of working from home is that you no longer need to commute. When I used to work for the federal government, I used to commute 30 minutes morning and night to get to work, which I know for some of you communicating 1 hour to get to work each day, it seems like nothing. Finding legitimate work from home jobs is easier than you think! But it’s important to be looking in the right places to find legitimate opportunities. A great place to start looking is to Google brands that you love, as most brands like restaurant chains or software systems that you know and use, have a dedicated jobs page with work-from-home opportunities you can apply to. 

You can also search job board websites like indeed.com, Flexjobs.com or We Work Remotely.

Once you find a job posting you’ll want to look at the application criteria, legitimate opportunities will ask for you to upload your resume or portfolio, answer questions, and generally get to know you better as well as your contact information. 

Another great idea is to Google the company. If others have been scammed or have had issues with a company most of the time they will post and complain about it! You can often find a Reddit thread where people discuss what’s happened to them.

I’ve mentioned a few times in this article platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, while these platforms are great for getting started and building your confidence and portfolio, they are also crawling with scammers. 

Here are a few key signs that you are speaking to a scammer online. 

Everything is urgent: They need something done ASAP. By creating a sense of urgency, they appeal to your fear of missing out on an opportunity, you are more likely to make a rash decision. This is how they get you!

They ask for money: Never should you provide any kind of banking information to someone without first having spoken to them face to face, or signed a contract, and never should you pay them upfront. 

They won’t meet with you over Zoom: Scammers are often pretending to be people they aren’t and are reluctant to meet you over Zoom because they know you will clue into what’s going on if they do. 

Vague job descriptions: most often, but not always, scammers have very broken English and you can easily tell by the way job descriptions are written with very little information and lots of spelling mistakes. 

So while platforms like Fiverr and Upwork can be great tools in the beginning to build your portfolio, just be mindful that there are people trying to harm others on these platforms.
