I too was once in your shoes, but when I finally landed on How to Become a Virtual Assistant, everything clicked for me and I’ve never gone back.

While I would love to say that everything was easy, it took a lot of blood, sweat, and yes tears to get me started on my journey. That’s why today, I’m sharing my 5 Top Tips on How to Become a Virtual Assistant, in the hopes that I can help fast-track your journey to becoming a Mommy VA.

This post shares 5 Top Tips on How to Become a Virtual Assistant

1. Determine Your Ideal Virtual Assistant Salary

One of the biggest stress points for anyone thinking about getting into the Virtual Assistant industry is how much money to expect to make as a virtual assistant? To help you fast-track your decision let’s jump right in and look at the average Virtual Assistant Salary figures to give you a rough idea of what’s possible in the industry.

According to ZipRecruiter.com, the national average for a Virtual Assistant is $24.00 per hour. Not bad right? With it ranging from as low as $11.54 per hour all the way to $33.89 per hour. With a national average salary of just over $50,000 per year.

That being said, it isn’t going to be realistic for most to expect their first year out to be able to make $50,000 right off the bat. But it is definitely something to work towards.

You may want to consider building up your savings account to allow yourself a transition period into the industry, while also relieving some of the financial pressure with a job change.

PRO TIP: Write down your 3, 6, and 12-month salary goals so that you know what to strive for. How much money do you need to be making to quit your 9-to-5?

2. I Have ZERO Skills, Are There Virtual Assistant Jobs for Beginners?

Of course, there are! For every 100 businesses, 99 business owners are overwhelmed and would love to delegate certain tasks of their business (I just made this stat up, but I know it to be true, ha!).

And a lot of the tasks that they want to delegate to you are things that you already know how to do because you’ve been doing them for yourself for years! Probably since you first learned how to use a computer, which for most of us has been our whole life.

Here’s a quick list of Virtual Assistant Jobs for Beginners

  • Email Management- checking emails and responding to urgent inquiries
  • Calendar Management- making sure there aren’t double bookings, scheduling clients, etc
  • Travel Arrangements- booking airline flights, hotel rooms, rental cars
  • Data Entry- accurately typing data into a digital system
  • Content Creation-posting to social media, creating graphics, and writing captions
  • Copywriter- writing blog posts, captions for social media, newsletters, etc.

There are honestly so many jobs a beginner virtual assistant could do I could go on and on! But with a little time and effort, you can easily come up with a list of skills that you already know how to do and would benefit a business owner by saving them time so that they can focus on more important aspects of their business.

PRO TIP: Instead of focusing on the skills you DON’T have, set a timer for 10 minutes to brainstorm skills that you DO have and could benefit a potential client. Use these skills to market yourself.

3. What Is The Most Profitable Virtual Assistant Niche?

To be completely honest, when first wanting to become a Virtual Assistant, this was never a question that crossed my mind. When I wanted to quit my government job, I happily accepted whatever client fit my skill set regardless of niche. There was no way I was going to refuse a potential client based on niche alone.

It turns out that my Virtual Assistant Niche found me and I ended up working primarily with Interior Designers as a Procurement Expert, but that’s a story for another day!

So while I am giving you a list of Profitable Virtual Assistant Niches, in no way do you need to feel like you need to limit yourself to only one niche, especially in the beginning. (The ‘experts’ probably disagree with me on this one.)

Profitable Virtual Assistant Niches- In no particular order

  • Social Media VA
  • Administrative VA
  • Executive VA
  • Project Manager
  • Bookkeeper

Honestly, I could go on and on with this one too!

PRO TIP: Take a few moments to look at the list of skills you brainstormed for #2. What niche do you think those skills would best fit in?

4. Where Should I Market Myself As A Virtual Assistant

Good question, this is something that I talk in depth about in my 9-to-5 Exit Strategy playbook, 30 days to becoming a Virtual Assistant.

Getting back to this article!

I highly recommend you get on LinkedIn and will die on that hill!

With LinkedIn’s huge network of professionals, I can almost guarantee that you will find clients in your niche and be able to win them over with an effective outreach strategy.

LinkedIn is obviously not the only option, you can also market yourself on Instagram, Facebook, Facebook groups, etc.

Just because you like hanging out on a particular platform doesn’t mean your ideal client is also hanging out there. If necessary, you should be willing to learn a new platform to attract your ideal people.

PRO TIP: Take a few moments to research and brainstorm where your ideal client lives on the internet. What platform do you need to start showing up on to win over your first client?

5. Virtual Assistant Courses, Yay or Nay?

Virtual Assistant Courses come in all shapes and sizes, you could spend a few hundred dollars on a course or you could spend a few THOUSAND dollars on a course. It’s totally up to you and your pocketbook.

But I bet I can safely assume that if you are searching How to Become a Virtual Assistant, you’re wanting to make a career switch without too much delay. Lucky for you I have a few options!

Your 9-to-5 Exit Strategy- LOWEST OPTION

In this playbook, I’ve broken down how to become a Virtual Assistant in 30 days, I mean technically you could finish all of the steps in less than 30 days but the idea behind the playbook was to create a 30-day plan of actionable steps so that you can exit your 9-to-5 and start your dream career working from home as a Mommy VA.

VA School- MEDIUM OPTION

Belinda Sandor’s VA School is the most comprehensive Virtual Assistant course that I am aware of AT a reasonable price point. She goes over essential topics like how to choose a niche, how to price your services, how to deal with contracts, and much more! The VA School is only open at certain times of the year, so if you are considering taking the course, jump on the waitlist for the next available start date!

That being said, I do highly suggest you invest in either an E-Book or VA course that can show you step-by-step how to get started, since this is pretty much a surefire way to fast track your journey to becoming a VA BUT do know that I did NOT take a course when I started.

If budget is an issue you can, by all means, research your way to becoming a Mommy VA, just know that you are paying with your time, and possibly some frustration. Everything will be worth it in the long run.
